The Top 5 Antioxidants for Your Skin

We all know that antioxidants are good for our bodies, because they’re found in healthy foods. But in recent years, they’ve been used more and more in skincare, because the benefits when applied topically, are completely different. So, what do antioxidants do for the skin? An antioxidant is a naturally occurring vitamin or mineral that protects your skin against damaging free radicals (smog, UV rays, basically all the bad stuff the environment attacks us with every day, etc). This in turn causes the collagen in your face to stop replenishing and breaks down your DNA, making you look older. But, let’s get real, no one antioxidant can do it all. So here is our list of the top five that are best for your skin.

Coenzyme Q10

That’s CoQ10 to us! It is found naturally in the human body, so there’s already some resident in your cells right now. Knowing that it is crucial for cellular energy production and protects from heart damage on the inside of your body, research was done to see what benefits it had when applied topically. Super Oxide Dismutase

Super Oxide Dismutase or SOD as we call it in the skincare world, is known for neutralizing the superoxide free radical, which is the most harmful type of free radical found in the body. You’ll most likely find this antioxidant in products that claim to fight the signs of aging, but it really is one of the most crucial antioxidants on the market for those of all ages. All the Vitamins (A, C, and E)

We know, this is technically cheating, but there is a reason why so many products have more than one of these in it - they work better together. All are antioxidants, but they each also have individual little miracles they perform daily. Vitamin A is best for smoothing fine lines and wrinkles due to containing retinal, Vitamin C brightens, and Vitamin E moisturizes. Flavonoids

You’re probably getting a fair share of these bad boys from all the colorful fruits and veggies you eat, but topically it’s a whole different ballgame.
